Intriguing 'Inception' Trailer Void of 'Batman'

For a while, I was persistent with the notion that Inception was a code name for Memento director Christopher Nolan's third Batman film. With the cast that he's got lined up, including Bats veterans Cilian Murphy, Michael Caine, and Ken Watanabe, it almost seemed like clockwork that the oft-rumored potential "replacement" for Heath Ledger as The Joker, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Brick, The Lookout), was brought aboard and might possibly find his way into the picture as a suitable, worthy stand-in much in the vein of the gaggle of talent behind Dr. Parnassus. However, bear this in mind: I'm a Nolan supporter far before I'm a Nolan-directed Batman supporter (even though I'm a nerd for the character), so those initial thoughts were actually somewhat of a downer in my mind since they led towards another Nolan film "inside the box" instead of a complex outside-thinking piece of work -- like his surprisingly potent magician thriller, The Prestige.

Well, an Inception teaser with a fistful of footage has been released by Warner Brothers, and the fact that it's clearly leaning towards being an actual science-fiction film instead of a Batman cover-up is a beautiful thing. Beliefs about Scorsese's lucky charm Leonardo Dicaprio (The Aviator, The Departed) being The Riddler, Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose) being Catwoman, and Gordon-Levitt possibly taking a stab at The Joker have been buried; what comes now is pure, enthralled excitement for this oddly claustrophobic science-fiction film existing in the confines of the human mind. It's great that WB quickly put these theories to rest, because now the excitement can build for the first film where Christopher Nolan's the director and SOLE WRITER of a new type of intricately-constructed suspense picture.

July 2010 can't come sooner.

Thoughts? Love to hear 'em -- if they're kept clean and civil.
